USPSTF and the American Heart Association recommend annual physical exams for adults. The annual visit is where most preventive screenings are ordered and coordinated.
The annual physical examination is the cornerstone of preventive medicine. USPSTF (US Preventive Services Task Force) and the AHA recommend annual wellness visits for all adults. The annual visit serves multiple functions: reviewing and updating all preventive screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, cancer screenings), assessing and managing chronic conditions, updating vaccinations, discussing mental health, and establishing a baseline for comparison in future years. Under the ACA, annual wellness visits are covered 100% by most health insurance plans without deductible or co-pay.
Schedule your annual physical every year, typically around the same time for consistency. The annual exam is when your physician coordinates all your preventive screenings — if you skip it, you may also inadvertently skip cancer screenings, cholesterol checks, and vaccination updates that are overdue.
The annual physical and the annual "wellness visit" are not the same billing code under many insurance plans. A "wellness visit" is the ACA-mandated preventive visit covered at 100%. A "physical exam" may be billed as a regular office visit with cost sharing. When scheduling, use the phrase "I want to schedule my annual wellness visit" to ensure you get the preventive visit, not a regular appointment.
A comprehensive annual physical typically includes: blood pressure measurement, height/weight and BMI, hearing and vision screening, head-to-toe physical examination, review of medications and allergies, ordering or reviewing preventive screenings (cholesterol, blood sugar, cancer screenings), vaccination updates, and a discussion of lifestyle, mental health, and health goals.
